How to: Getting your linked In profile up to scratch

I was at work yesterday and it came up in conversation how Linked In could be used as another social channel to promote our business on, then, the unexpected happened – my colleague confessed she didn’t have a Linked In account.

Until only recently, neither had Tom but we’ll put that down to him being flippin’ lazy.

To me it’s unfathomable that somebody could go so long without having one, for 2 reasons:

1. During my college and university years this was all anybody could talk about – it was the sure fire way to get in contact with employers and showcase your abilities.

and

2. How can you research potential job prospects and companies without it. I remember when I was searching for a graduate role before I graduated and I used Linked In to research the company as well as the interviewer.

I’m not saying that it’s the be all or end all however more often than not recruiters and employers use this platform to source potential candidates. As the market gets increasingly competitive, especially for graduates, its better to have something rather than nothing.

Here are 5 reasons as to why I think you should be on LinkedIn.

#1 – Your employers use this platform, not just recruiters!

Linked In was originally designed as a social network for professionals but has soon turned into a platform that hosts a number of facilities, whether that is advertising; joining groups; following your favourite influencers or even applying for a new job. It’s 41 million users span across 200 countries which include executives from the fortune 500 list.

With this being said, a 2014 study by Jobvite found that 4 in 10 job seekers found their ‘dream job’ via personal connections, not only this but the study also found that 94% of recruiters said they used Linked In to find potential candidates.

Note: If that many recruiters are on Linked In, I’d suggest you should be too.

#2 – Only 36% of users use Linked In for job seeking!

Now going by the above statistics you’d be crazy to not have a Linked In account already but to convince you even further heres a few more facts. 73% of companies successfully recruited via social channels, having raved about Linked In I will point out that a mere 33% of Linked In users are women – their preferred method is Facebook at 58% of users.

However.. you know that point I was making earlier about how the market is so competitive? Well looks like on here it’s not, only 36% of job seekers are active on Linked In meaning there is a lot less competition to apply for one job.

#3 – Linked In is the ultimate platform to build your personal brand!

Listen up: calling all aspiring business owners – your personal brand is EVERYTHING. Networking (who) and personal branding (what) alway matters in the world of business and is key when setting up how you want to appear to your market.

Have you ever heard of the phrase “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have”? It applies in this instance too, create your brand and page to appeal to the job you want not the one you’re already stuck with. Building a strong personal brand says a lot about you as a person and gives the reader a strong indication of your personality traits (harsh I know, but it’s true).

Note: Linked In may be one of many social platforms you have however how you brand yourself and how you market yourself says a lot about you as a person.

#4 – There are so many great tools you can utilise, so why ignore them?

It should come as no surprise that this platform comes with bells and whistles, much like Facebook and Twitter it includes a range of features for users to operate. One of which is the recommendations and endorsements section.

This is a great opportunity for your colleagues or peers to showcase your abilities. Think of this section as testimonials or references. Have you ever been to a job interview or filled out an application and it asks for 2 references? Yeah, Me too.

If recruiters or employers are checking out your profile, they may not need to ask as it’s already right in front of them.

Note: If you accumulate all your praise now, early on, it will save you tons later on.

#5 – The network is there, you just have to know how to use it!

If you meet somebody at an event or networking luncheon its totally acceptable to connect with them on Linked In and follow up on your introduction. This is a great way to maintain business relationships.

Think of it this way, you may be comfortable with your network now but what happens when this is gone? Where is your fall back? If you utilise your network now you’ll have that safety net that many of us don’t. You know the saying “it’s not what you know but who” – this is especially the case on social media.

Everyone knows someone who can help. Your 2nd and 3rd connections are the most important, you’ll be able to ask for introductions from connections who are the common denominator between you and your preferred user.

Another great benefit to building your network is company updates, you can follow the companies you’re interested in and you’ll be able to track news updates or job openings.
